How to Land a Career in Digital Marketing & Analytics

April 12, 2021 Laura

A “perfect” career is going to mean something different to each and every person. What you consider your dream job isn’t going to be the same for your friends or family members. Even the way you rank careers will vary, but typically it takes into account such things as your personal interests and natural talents, your skills, experience, what that job market is like, where the jobs are, the salary, and for some people, whether or not that job allows them to work abroad. If you’ve taken all these questions into account and landed on a job in digital marketing and analytics, then the next logical question is how you get started?

Digital marketing has most certainly gained steam in the past decade thanks to the reliance people have on the internet. Where it used to be that companies relied on traditional forms of marketing, today, pretty much every company big and small across all industries needs to have a robust digital marketing strategy in place. And, of course, the best digital marketing strategies are those built on solid data and analytics, which help to guide them moving forward.

So, let’s lay out some of the necessary steps you’ll want to take in order to better your odds of landing a perfect career in digital marketing In analytics.

Pursue Your Masters – Stand Out from the Competition

One of the first things to address is your own background where knowledge, skills, and education are concerned. Because the digital marketing industry is so huge, there is a lot of competition out there. So, how do you stand out from the rest? Pursuing your Masters in Business Analytics at a reputable school like Aston University is most definitely a wise investment in your future.

In a program such as this, you’ll be learning what it takes to put together successful digital marketing campaigns with the use of analytics. It’s about creating data-driven campaigns, which will turn around results.

Do Some Research on the Career

It’s also a good idea to do research on what a career in digital marketing looks like, what the expectations are, what your typical responsibilities would be, and who would employ you. The more you learn the more you can start to form a viable plan to landing your dream job.

The good news is that here in the UK, digital marketing jobs are very much in demand, which means you likely have the upper hand. There are a lot of employers looking for qualified professionals to join their team, which means you need to have what they are looking for. It’s normal to assume you’ll start on the ground floor, and then you can make your way up the career ladder.

In digging a little deeper, you may also be interested to learn what this kind of career would offer in terms of your salary. For a digital marketing coordinator, the average is £28,306.81. This would be more of your entry-level position and you may even be part of a digital marketing team. From there, you can work up to a manager which has an average salary of £31,024.56. Of course, the more time you spend in the job, the more you learn, and the more effective you become in the position, you can start looking at much higher salaries.

As a digital marketing coordinator, some of your responsibilities can include putting together a variety of marketing material, finding images to work with the campaign, helping to launch the campaign, and then following up and staying on top of its progress – this is where analytics will really have an impact.

Get to Know the Industry as a Whole

Because the digital marketing industry is built around the use of technology, it’s also smart to stay on top of industry news and trends. This again can help give you the upper hand when going up against the competition in job interviews. Having a firm grasp of where the industry stands right now, and where it’s heading will help to make you more effective in your role.

Be Creative and Think Outside the Box

While using data-driven facts to help shape and create digital marketing campaigns will be a huge part of your job, there’s also a creative element involved. Some of the most successful marketers out there are the ones who are creative, think outside the box, and aren’t afraid to take calculated risks.

Remember, at its very core it’s all about creating a campaign that will stand out, grab the attention of people, resonate with the target audience, and push them into action. That’s a whole lot you need to achieve with marketing messages, so it really does require an analytical and creative mind.

When searching for a job in the industry, employers will often ask to see a portfolio of your work. This can be hard for those just getting into the scene straight out of school, as they don’t have any experience yet. It may be useful to create some mock-up campaigns to show what you’re capable of.

Keep On Learning throughout Your Career

The final tip really takes a look at how you proceed forward once you land your dream career. The last thing you want to do is get comfortable and assume things will just stay as they are, coast through campaigns, and expect the same results.

The fact is that times change, technology changes, trends change, products come and go, and yes even the customers change. You need to be able to keep up with the times and be open to continuous learning. The more open you are to learning and embracing new experiences, the more successful you can be.

Your Dream Job Awaits

So, if it’s a career in digital marketing and analytics that you have been dreaming about, it’s time to go ahead and lay out your plan for success. This is an exciting field that is filled with changes and evolution, and that shows no signs of slowing.
