In the wild, uncharted terrain of the gig economy, you’re the lone ranger, the solitary sentinel, the one-person band playing a tune that’s all your own. But fear not weary freelancer – there are others out there like you, and though we may never meet in person, we genuinely care about your well-being. Gig economy living is tough and filled with fear and uncertainty. But it’s also deeply exhilarating for these exact same reasons.

If you’re keen to even out the uncertainties and get the gig economy working for you, here are seven survival strategies to help you not just survive but thrive in this brave new world.

1. Embrace the Uncertainty

The gig economy is unpredictable. One day you’re swamped with work, the next you’re twiddling your thumbs. Embrace this uncertainty like an old friend. After all, who needs stability when you’ve got adrenaline?

To cover the practical side of embracing uncertainty, arm yourself with a suite of free or low-cost tools, including invoicing software, communication platforms, a time management app, and the best online tax return service. When you’re flush with cash, consider investing in helpful tech like noise-canceling headphones, an emergency internet service, automation software, and a data backup and disaster recovery system. Remember, you can claim back these expenses come tax time!

2. Diversify Your Skills

In the gig economy, being a jack-of-all-trades is more of a compliment than an insult. The more skills you have, the more gigs you can take on. So, if you have the capacity, go ahead and learn graphic design, master coding, or become fluent in Chinese. Who knows what new opportunities these skills may unlock.

3. Network Like a Pro

What you know is massively important, but who you know is arguably going to help you more. So, get out there and network like your livelihood depends on it because, well, it does. Remember, every person you meet is a potential client, collaborator, or mentor. At the very least, they’re a potential coffee buddy and commiserator.

4. Master Your Time (and Your Clients)

Managing clients can sometimes feel like herding cats. But with a little discipline and a lot of coffee, even the most frazzled freelancer can become a master cat herder. Prioritize your tasks, set realistic deadlines, and don’t forget to take breaks. The key is to keep both your expectations and your clientele’s expectations realistic.

5. Take Care of Yourself

In the hustle and bustle of gig work, it’s easy to neglect your health. But remember, a healthy freelancer is a productive freelancer. So, eat well, exercise regularly, and get plenty of sleep. And remember, mental health is just as important as physical health. So, don’t be afraid to take a mental health day when you need it.

6. Know Your Worth

As a freelancer, knowing your worth is half the battle. Don’t hesitate to negotiate better pay. After all, you can’t pay the bills with exposure. And remember the golden gig economy rule: If a client isn’t willing to pay you what you’re worth, they’re probably not worth your time.

7. Keep Learning

The gig economy is always changing, so you have to keep your chin up and keep learning. Stay up-to-date with the latest tools, trends, and tech in your niche. Remember, knowledge is power, and in the gig economy, it’s also your ticket to success.

So, there you have it – seven survival strategies for thriving in the gig economy. It may be a wild ride, but with these tips in your arsenal, you’re sure to come out on top.
