Tips for Keeping your Teeth Healthy

December 21, 2019 Laura

Our teeth look after us by helping us to chew up our food. However, we don’t always look after our teeth quite as well as we should. The good news is this article will should you how you can keep your teeth healthy so they continue to work well for you.

Brush your Teeth Twice a Day

It’s important that you brush your teeth twice a day, if not more often. One of the best times for you to brush your teeth is after you have had a meal. Try to opt for a toothbrush that has soft bristles as they’re less likely to hurt your gums.

Some people like to brush their teeth after they’ve eaten something sugary.

Brush your Teeth properly

When you brush your teeth, make sure you do it properly. You should ideally take from 2 to 3 minutes each time you brush your teeth. Make sure you reach all of your teeth at the front and the back. Clean as much of each tooth as you can in the 2 to 3 minutes.

If you’re not sure you’re spending enough time cleaning your teeth sing “Happy Birthday” to yourself while you’re brushing. Do this 2 -3 times while you’re brushing and you’ll have brushed your teeth for long enough. If you’re not sure you’re brushing your teeth properly speak to your family dentist who will show you what you need to do.

Floss your Teeth

No matter how well you brush your teeth, it’s likely that you will leave some food in between your teeth. Using a gentle sawing action, make sure the floss picks up those small pieces of food that you missed. Floss at least once a day so that your teeth aren’t as likely to suffer from decay.

Cut Down on Sugary Drinks

Some drinks contain a lot more sugar than we realize. We can consume large amounts of sugar without knowing. Not only can it have an affect on your waistline but it can also damage your teeth. This is why you should seriously consider cutting down on sugary drinks. Did you know that the bacteria in plaque change the sugar in to acids? These acids can damage your teeth. Cutting down will help to limit the damage.

Only Use your Teeth to Chew Food

Many people are tempted to open bottle caps with their teeth. Others use their teeth to crack nuts open or to open some packaging. Your teeth were not designed for these activities and you could end up damaging them. You might even break a tooth by opening a bottle. Find another way to get into the packaging, using some scissors rather than your teeth.

Many of us clean our teeth twice a day but we also tend to take them for granted. If you know how to look after your teeth you’re most likely to be kind to them. When you look after your teeth they will be around to look after you for much longer.
