3 Things You Can Stop Buying That Will Save You A Lot Of Money

February 25, 2022 Laura

Whether you are saving up in hopes of paying for a car down payment or treating yourself to a new tattoo, it can be a struggle to save the amount you want to quickly enough. You may be thinking of different side hustles to start, or things you can eliminate from your shopping lists in order to help you out. The truth is there are probably a lot of small things you are buying on a regular basis that you don’t actually need and could easily do without, and many of them will save you a lot of money if you stop purchasing them! Here are 3 examples.

Cigarettes

If you are a smoker, even of the electronic variety, you won’t be surprised to find out that by quitting you will not only be saving your health, but also helping out your bank account! Cigarettes are expensive – in fact, someone who typically smokes a pack a day will save up to $300 a month by making the decision to quit. If you are really motivated to save money, it might be a helpful motivator in getting rid of a habit you may not be too fond of anyway.

Coffee

If you are the type of person who needs/wants a coffee in the morning to jump start your day, more power to you. However, it’s not necessary (and can get expensive) to stop at a coffee shop every day. On average, your morning coffee likely costs somewhere around the $5 mark, and that can really add up over time.

Instead, try making coffee at home every morning. You may be surprised how much you will save! And you’ll be helping out the environment too by reducing the waste caused by single use cups.

Lotto Tickets

Lottery tickets aren’t super expensive at only a couple of dollars each, but if you are buying them constantly, that can still add up. Some people buy them all the time to try to increase their odds, while for others it’s just fun to dream, but either way the reality is that the probability of winning is extremely low. Once you realize this, treat yourself to the occasional ticket but cut yourself off from buying them daily or even weekly. Put that money into a jar or a savings account instead and in no time you’ll be pleased to see how much has accrued.

Saving money can be tough, especially with the cost of living being so high. But if there’s something special you want to save up for, there is no doubt that you can do it! Try eliminating these things from your budget and see where it gets you.
