3 Ways to Make Your Air Conditioner Work More Efficiently

August 5, 2024 Laura

It’s that time of year again when the temperatures rise and your air conditioner will become an integral part of your daily life. Not only does an air conditioner help you stay comfortable during the warm days, but it can also help you sleep better at night.

In some cases, having an air conditioner can even be a matter of safety, as young children certain types of pets, and seniors may be especially sensitive to extreme weather conditions.

Yet as fantastic as an air conditioner can be, it can also be burdensome if it isn’t working correctly. It can lead to frustration not being as cool as you would like to be, and worse, can lead to extremely expensive electric bills. To help you, here are some ways to make your air conditioner work more efficiently.

Regular Maintenance

Getting regular maintenance is critical if you hope to encourage your air conditioner to operate efficiently. Ideally, you should schedule maintenance at least once a year to ensure it’s in working condition. A service person will typically make sure that everything is working, from the refrigerant levels to the state of the coils.

You’ll also want to make sure that you replace the air filters as dirty filters won’t just cause your air conditioner to work less efficiently, but it can also lead to breathing and allergy problems.

Adjust Thermostat

The right thermostat settings can significantly impact how well your air conditioner works. The ideal place to set the temperature is the highest comfortable temperature you can handle, as this will save you a significant amount of money and also do a favor to the earth.

When you’re away, raise the temperature by a few degrees so that you reduce the cooling load of your unit. If possible, consider buying a programmable thermostat which will adjust automatically based on your schedule. Some thermostats even allow you to adjust the temperature remotely which can be especially helpful for reducing your energy costs and giving you peace of mind.

Use Fans

Placing fans strategically throughout your home will increase your home’s airflow and the amount of cool air going from one room to another. Place fans facing away from the air conditioner so that the cool air will blow exactly where you need it to go. It’s as simple as going on Amazon and buying a few portable fans and placing them here and there around your home. If you’re using ceiling fans, make sure that the ceiling fans are rotating counterclockwise if you hope to push the cool air down as heat rises.

This will keep you cool and comfortable even during the hottest days of the summer thanks to knowing the right tips for how to make your air conditioner work efficiently!
