Amazing Tips and Tricks for Preparing Items for Storage

November 6, 2020 Laura

When it comes to self-storage, it always helps to prep yourself with some tips to make the most of your space. Like keeping things at home, there are a few tricks you can use to make keeping your belongings a little more streamlined. Use these tips to help organize your things so you always know where to find them when you need them.

  1. Create an inventory listBefore you do anything, take inventory of what you’re keeping in storage. It can be easy to forget about what items you’ve stored later, so making a list now is a good way to organize your items for easy recall. Listing all your items also makes it easier for you to decide what size storage unit you’ll need to keep it all. For ease of organization, keep one copy for yourself, and another in the unit itself. This way, you can update your list whenever you take things out or put new things in.
  2. Label your boxes clearlyIf you have plenty of boxes, it also helps to label them clearly. While you can use plastic bins, if you elect to rely on boxes, make your labels clear to make it easier to tell what the contents are. Be specific with your labels as well. For instance, write down “pots, pans, dishes” instead of kitchen items. Taking care of this step can help save time when looking for specific items.
  3. Research storage restrictionsAnother pre-storage task to get done before setting out is finding out what you can and can’t store in your unit. Many storage units in North York provide a list of restricted items, but remember to ask for one if they don’t. Some examples of items that can’t be stored in a storage unit include gasoline, fertilizer, paint, and fireworks. A quick rule of thumb is that flammable items typically don’t belong in a storage unit. Perishable items are another thing to keep out of the unit, including food and medicine.
  4. Clean everything before storageBefore putting anything in storage, clean your items thoroughly first. Clean items are less likely to become damaged over time, and avoid that musty, mildew smell that occurs after long enough in storage. Wipe down all surfaces with an all-purpose cleaner, vacuum furniture to get rid of all the dust, and clean appliances with disinfectant wipes. While you’re at it, give your storage unit the same treatment. The facility should have cleaned it before you move in, but it doesn’t hurt to be thorough.
  5. Pack your unit strategically

When you finally get around to putting your items in your unit, be smart about how you place them. Large, heavy items belong on the bottom; this gives you a stable platform for stacking lighter items. It also helps to think vertical. Look for ways to stack boxes on top of each other to save floor space like hiring a forklift truck operator. Consider your more well-used items as well. Keep items you’ll need more regularly (e.g. seasonal clothes) near the entrance to make it easier to get them. If the unit is large enough, you may also need to consider creating paths to make it easier to get around. Make a map to go along with your inventory to plan out how to arrange your items for ease of retrieval.

The next time you need storage units, keep these tips in mind to help maximize your space. The right moves can make a world of difference, so take the time to arrange your items for ease of storage. It’ll all pay off when you need to get anything out of storage.
