Recently I have been looking into what the construction industry is going to look like in a life beyond Covid. I have heard from people across the industry and it was the CEO of Canbec Construction who first mentioned a changing trend whereby the tiny house movement would benefit greatly from a post-pandemic world. I would have thought that given the amount of time we’ve all spent at home, that most of us would be looking for more space, listening to the reasoning however, he was absolutely right.
This all got me thinking about tiny homes and here is why I believe that the movement and the shift in people’s thinking has resulted in more tiny homes being built.
Original Shift
The first time that we saw people looking to build these small homes near big cities was because of financial reasons. Many young professionals who had to move to bigger cities for opportunities were priced out of the market, yet they had to stay close to the city for work. The perfect answer to this, for those who wish to own their own home at least, is to buy a very small patch of land and build their own, tiny, economically friendly home, and that is what kickstarted the trend.
Environmental Options
Seeing the benefit of what this style of minimalist living could do, a greta number of eco-conscious people then jumped onto the idea and realized just how great the environmental benefit was of living in this kind of way. Energy reduction is a huge part of living in these kinds of homes and that can easily reference the building process itself or the living in a tiny house. Pre-fabricated tiny houses are very popular these days amongst people who are looking to reduce the impact which they have on the world.
Fashion
As with any moving trend there is always the fashion aspect to living in a place like this. Many people will have seen just how cool it is to live in a tiny house and then taken their own steps to make it a reality for them. This is something which we always see with trends and ultimately it is also what creates the trend in the first place, people jumping on to the idea.
Current Climate
The reason why it is believed that tiny homes will be more popular when this is all over is that many will have to downsize because of a changing job situation or perhaps because they have lost jobs. Others will be renting out their accommodation and will look for a lower cost way of living and this again is why many may opt to live in tiny house. And finally there is certainly a case to say that people are going to spend much more money after this is all over, and it is unlikely that they’ll be spending it on the home. This money will be saved on the home and then spend on traveling and having fun and adventure.
