Senior Citizens and Health: Top Tips for Staying Healthy

It doesn’t matter how old you are, you need to take care of yourself. When you look after your body you will help to prevent illnesses and a wide range of conditions. If you’re aged 65 or older, you might find that having a cold or the flu has the potential to lead to some complications. If you already have diabetes or asthma, there’s even more potential to make things worse for yourself.

The good news is the tips below can help you to stay healthy, no matter how old you are:

Stay Active

One of the most important things you can do is to stay active. When you move around more, your body is able to fight a wide range of infections and inflammation more. Go for a walk, hop on a bicycle, or enjoy a spot of swimming. Whatever you decide to do, just make sure you’re active for at least 150 minutes (2 ½ hours) every week.

Enjoy a Healthy Balanced Diet

When you consume a diet that’s rich in lean meats, vegetables, and fruits, you have a much better chance of boosting your immune system. When your immune system is working as well as it should be, your body will be better equipped to fight bacteria and viruses. In addition to this, fruits, as well as vegetables are a great source of antioxidants which can help to keep you healthy.

Try to limit your intake of fatty foods and food and drink that’s high in sugar. If you’re not sure what you should be eating, ask someone from your local community healthcare outreach or your doctor.

Always Get Lots of Rest

When you get enough rest you’ll start to feel so much better. You’ll also start to reduce your level of stress. In addition to these benefits, getting enough rest can help to support your immune system. Try to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night. Most people attempt to have around 8 hours of sleep, but it all depends on how much they need.

If you find that you’re not getting enough sleep, why not speak to your doctor? They might be able to come up with a few solutions for you or determine why you’re having trouble sleeping. If you tend to have a lot of caffeine during the day or you are quite inactive, you might need to make a few changes to your routine.

Always Have a Flu Vaccination

Those who are 65 years of age or older are much more likely to suffer from the flu. This is why it’s important to have your vaccination when it’s time. In addition to being more susceptible to the flu, the illness could lead to other conditions. Ensure you have the vaccination every year so you’re less likely to fall ill.

As you can see, there are ways and means for you to stay healthy. Use the above tips to help you feel better and don’t forget to speak to a healthcare professional if you have any concerns.
