Understanding the Root Causes of Refugee Status

September 27, 2023 Laura

A refugee is an individual who has fled their home country due to the threat of severe human rights violations and persecution if they were to remain there. The level of danger to their well-being and lives became so overwhelming that they were compelled to depart and seek safety outside their nation because their government either could not or would not shield them from these perils. However, to safeguard their human rights, many refugee services are available.

5 Causes Behind Refugee Crisis

It is crucial to understand the root causes of refugees’ status to provide suitable assistance or refugee services. While these causes vary by country, some key factors drive the ongoing refugee crisis and impact millions globally.

  • Persecution

Presently, the predominant cause behind an individual’s refugee status is persecution, which encompasses a wide range of reasons that contribute to refugee crises. These reasons encompass racial, religious, social, and political persecution, making it the most prevalent factor driving people into refugee status. Illustrations of persecution comprise acts such as assassination, torture, various forms of violence, unjustified detainment, wrongful imprisonment, and persistent, severe discrimination.

  • Food Insecurity

Millions of individuals residing in North Africa, the Middle East, South Sudan, Nigeria, and Yemen confront the harsh impact of severe drought. Many of these individuals are compelled to become refugees as they are uprooted from their native lands in pursuit of more dependable food resources. In fact, the United Nations has officially characterized the global hunger crisis as the most significant humanitarian emergency. The scale of this crisis extends to encompass millions of individuals worldwide who grapple with the pressing issue of food insecurity. This dire situation has profound consequences, triggering widespread displacement and contributing to the burgeoning refugee crisis.

  • Climate Change

Formally, climate change has yet to be recognized as a legitimate basis for seeking refugee status. For many years, approximately millions of individuals were displaced as a consequence of climate-related factors, encompassing storms, floods, cyclones, droughts, wildfires, and landslides. Although a substantial portion of these displacements occurred within national borders, there is an increasing trend of such events pushing people to migrate across international boundaries.

  • Human rights violation

Numerous nations grapple with a grave infringement of human rights, perpetrated by individuals who wield substantial wealth and influence. These actions are typically orchestrated by those in positions of authority, driven by motives of avarice, corruption, and the pursuit of power. Widespread corruption contributes significantly to heightened unemployment rates and pronounced economic inequality. Within these nations, underprivileged citizens frequently endure violations at the hands of the affluent and influential members of society.

  • Poverty

Poverty is one of the primary contributors to the worldwide refugee crisis, and a poignant illustration of this phenomenon can be found in many nations. Consequently, a staggering surge in the number of refugees has been witnessed in the past few years, primarily driven by financial instability, limited access to essential provisions such as food and healthcare, and rampant inflation.

Conclusion

Each of these situations related to refugees represents a significant international challenge, and all of these are interconnected, mutually worsening one another in a vicious cycle. To understand the global refugee crisis and the importance of refugee services, one must dialectically analyze the intricate interplay among these listed factors and others.
