3 Things To Do When You’ve Experienced A Data Breach

November 28, 2022 Laura

Sadly, data breaches are something that can happen to any person and to any business. While you might like to think that this isn’t something that could take place in your life, it’s going to be much more helpful to have a plan in place in the event that this does happen to you so that you don’t get taken unawares or lose precious time that could be spent protecting yourself and your company.

To help you see how this can be done, here are three things to prepare to do when you’ve experienced a data breach.

Put An Alert On Your Credit And Accounts

Just because there has been a data breach related to accounts that you have doesn’t necessarily mean that something negative will happen to you, either now or in the future. However, to be ready in the event that something does happen, it’s wise to put alerts on your credit and certain accounts that may now be more vulnerable.

When you put these kinds of alerts in place, you’ll be notified any time something happens regarding that account that could be deemed as fraud. This could include purchases that look suspicious, requests for extending additional credit to you, and more. This way, if someone does try to take advantage of you and your finances, you’ll become aware of this as soon as it happens and can take steps to stop it.

Start Using New Passwords

As soon as you’ve been made aware that a data breach has taken place, one of the first and best things that you can do is to change all of the passwords associated with whatever accounts or information were breached. Even if you just changed the password, it’s important that you change it again.

If you aren’t already using a password manager, you might want to consider signing up with one so that it can keep track of your passwords for you. This way, you can have strong passwords that you don’t have to worry about remembering. And with strong passwords, the chances of your account being hacked drastically decrease.

Make Sure You’re Using The Most Up-To-Date Software

Another way that accounts and software can be hacked is by using versions that are out-of-date. Because of this, you should seek to update any software or apps that you’re using to ensure that you’ve got the current most version in operation. Otherwise, you could be using software that has a hole in the security that is now fixed but that isn’t fixed in the product you’re using because you haven’t updated it yet.

If you get word that some of your data had been breached, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you learn what to do to keep yourself and your data safe from threats.
