5 Safety Training Programs That You Should Implement Before It’s Too Late

When it comes to running a business, it is always a top priority to make your workplace a safe environment for your employees. A good place to start is to conduct safety training in Vaughan. A well-trained workforce begets workplace safety culture, where everyone feels safe and protected from potential accidents, leading to injury, health problems, and worst, death.

Safety training is beneficial to both the company and its employees. However, determining which training courses are best for your business can be challenging. One worry that employers have about health and safety training and awareness is that employees won’t engage fully. However, ‘health and safety has, at least to a large extent, solved this problem’, says David Rowland, the head of marketing Engage EHS. This is because the process is much more social and, if you must, you can measure your employees’  engagement in the process.

So how do you know what safety training your organization needs? The best safety training depends on your location, industry, and the hazards present in the work environment.

Here are the top five safety training programs to implement to make your business a safer place for everyone:

1.Hazardous Waste Management – Some industries produce hazardous waste that should be handled and managed properly. Hazardous waste can be generated from various sources, such as industrial manufacturing process waste to discarded batteries. It can come in different forms, including solid, liquid, vapour, and sludges. Improper management can have disastrous effects on human health and the environment.

Hazardous waste management training is extremely vital for people working in industrial and manufacturing plants. This helps ensure compliance with hazardous waste regulations. The training also includes proper container management, storage processes, and emergency responses.

2. OSHA 10 for General Industry – The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10-Hour Outreach Training Program for General Industry training is designed to educate entry-level employees on the following important information:

  • OSHA standards
  • Safety and health hazards in their work environment
  • Identifying, reducing, and preventing job site hazards

This type of training is crucial for healthcare professionals, factory operators, warehouse personnel, and manufacturing and storage workers. Considered as a great introduction to workplace safety, the OSHA 10-Hour General Industry training helps create a safety culture for your business.

3. First Aid – No matter how safe the work environment is, accidents can still potentially happen. First aid education trains your employees how to respond quickly in the event of an accident or injury. The first aid training course usually involves one-time, short-term treatment to prevent a minor problem from escalating and provide temporary relief. The training includes:

    • Cleaning minor cuts, scrapes, and scratches
    • Treating minor burns
    • Proper application of bandages and dressings
    • Use of correct non-prescription medicine
    • Removal of debris from the eyes
    • Draining blisters
    • Administering fluids for heat stress relief

4. Emergency Action Plan – OSHA obligates all business operators to create an Emergency Action Plan designed to address all credible threats, such as earthquake, fire, chemical release, and extreme weather. It should include essential items like identifying a potential emergency situation, warning sounds, evacuation routes, and assembly areas.

5. Lockout/Tag Out – A lockout/tag out training is important for workers using, maintaining, and inspecting energized equipment. It is designed to guide authorized personnel through a series of procedures that ensures the safety of the machine.

Training helps employees understand and follow the necessary provisions associated with the hazardous energy control process. It covers three important areas:

  • Aspects of the employer’s energy control program
  • Different OSHA standard requirements related to lockout/tag out
  • Factors of the energy control procedure relevant to the duties of the employee.

Compliance with the lockout/tag out training can effectively prevent job site injuries and fatalities every year.
